WHAT WE DO

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Trios engages in organizing workshops and seminars for various groups including Civil Society Organizations and religious groups. We also advance initiatives that promote gender access and quality education for all to achieve EFA goals. Apart from establishing one of the largest libraries in Kwara State, Trios has promoted adult literacy centers with UNDP, advocacy for girl child enrolment as team lead on CSACEFA, Oxfam/ Novib project to communities.

Trios has established a library in partnership with Radio Kwara, the Kwara State government owned radio station, for media practitioners and the public.

PEACE AND CONFLICT RESOLUTION

Trios was involved in the Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution/ United Nations Development Programme (IPCR/UNDP) driven process of preparing the draft document of the National Peace Policy in Nigeria; this places us at vantage point to share skills and organize training for various groups, our members are also well trained to engage in mediation and counselling between individuals and communities.

Trios Executive Director, Ade Bodunde, is a member of the Civil Society Organizations network steering committee on conflict resolution in North Central States of Nigeria; the zone that experiences the highest frequency of inter-communal and inter-religious conflicts.

HEALTH

Trios has a network of health professionals as members who run Trios Health Advisory Centers in order to improve healthcare delivery at community level. This pro- poor strategy has proved to be a veritable tool in providing additional access to good health advice, family planning, access to HIV screening, counselling and early referral. Members organize several outreach programmes to communities for enlightenment, counselling and screening exercise.

In view of the increasing health and social challenges that drug abuse poses among our youths today, Trios has taken up the challenge along with other stakeholders to promote a network of partners and Ambassadors to carry out enlightenment, advocacy, counselling and care/ rehabilitation of drug dependent persons.

Trios has 24 hours help line and on line enquiry services for counselling on health related matters and help for people who want to quit drugs.

POVERTY ERADICATION

One of the challenges of our time is youth unemployment and dwindling capacity to improve income especially among women in rural communities. Trios advances strategies by (1) Bridging the gap between research and the market place in agriculture and agro-processing. (2) Vocational skills development (3) Market access for small scale producers (4) Assistance to access short term loans to expand on-going activities.

Several forms of social maladjustments, risky behaviors, drug abuse and crime are given as excuses for failed coping mechanism. Trios is committed to partnering with stakeholders to provide training and support to help youths and women overcome these challenges

In addition to organizing capacity building and outreach programmes, members and kind spirited persons give materials such as clothes, shoes, school bags and so on that are given out to people in need.

World AIDS day 2010 was not jamboree, it was business unusual at Trios Human              Development Foundation. There was good collaboration with KWASACA and the HIV unit of Kwara State Ministry of Health.

Over sixty health workers that run Trios Health Advisory Centers across Kwara State spared time during the day to carry out enlightenment at their various locations. A team also set out seizing opportunity of heightened media enlightenment of the day to engage in serious community dialogue and screening of residents of Kanbi in Moro Local Government Area where prevalence is unusually high. Kanbi is a trailer route where most dwellers are temporary residents that ply the North-South transport route.

The outing proved strategic as our group joined a team from Friends in Global Health (FGH) that runs HIV clinic at Sobi specialist hospital, Ilorin. Advocacy was carried out to the community leaders and all risk factors and symptoms were discussed with them.

There is no government hospital in Kanbi which necessitated advocacy visit to the private clinics to discuss about the need to ensure proper screening of blood used for transfusion even during emergency. Trios aims to start a weekly screening and       counselling center in Kanbi in January 2011.

The clients that tested positive were referred to Sobi specialist hospital. The support from KWASACA and Ministry of Health who gave materials used during the outreach is vital and more of such will no doubt help stakeholders to tune down prevalence in Kanbi and similar communities

Over sixty (60) health workers form the back bone of Trios pro-poor and rural health outreach programmes
