World AIDS day 2010 was not jamboree, it was business unusual at Trios Human Development Foundation. There was good collaboration with KWASACA and the HIV unit of Kwara State Ministry of Health.
Over sixty health workers that run Trios Health Advisory Centers across Kwara State spared time during the day to carry out enlightenment at their various locations. A team also set out seizing opportunity of heightened media enlightenment of the day to engage in serious community dialogue and screening of residents of Kanbi in Moro Local Government Area where prevalence is unusually high. Kanbi is a trailer route where most dwellers are temporary residents that ply the North-South transport route.
The outing proved strategic as our group joined a team from Friends in Global Health (FGH) that runs HIV clinic at Sobi specialist hospital, Ilorin. Advocacy was carried out to the community leaders and all risk factors and symptoms were discussed with them.
There is no government hospital in Kanbi which necessitated advocacy visit to the private clinics to discuss about the need to ensure proper screening of blood used for transfusion even during emergency. Trios aims to start a weekly screening and counselling center in Kanbi in January 2011.
The clients that tested positive were referred to Sobi specialist hospital. The support from KWASACA and Ministry of Health who gave materials used during the outreach is vital and more of such will no doubt help stakeholders to tune down prevalence in Kanbi and similar communities
Over sixty (60) health workers form the back bone of Trios pro-poor and rural health outreach programmes
